About Us

Capital Area AIDS Prevention Effort (CAAPE) is a volunteer group of individuals from the diverse communities affected by HIV/AIDS. CAAPE is organized to assist and advise HIV vaccine trials that are being conducted in the metropolitan Washington, DC area.

Mission: Capital Area AIDS Prevention Effort is the local voice for HIV Prevention Research.

CAAPE is one of many volunteer Community Advisory Boards across the United States and around the world. CAAPE believes that community participation contributes to better science and better health outcomes for affected communities. Part of CAAPE's role is to monitor the research strategies and approaches so that values and cultural and ethnic differences among vaccine trial participants are respected.

To fulfill its mission, CAAPE:
  • engages in education, outreach and advocacy activities in our community
  • assists in the planning, development, and implementation of HIV Vaccine Trials Network research
  • assesses community impact and ensure community concerns are considered
  • serves as a voice for the community and study participants.

CAAPE meetings are generally held monthly and hosted at the DC Center. For upcoming meetings and events, please visit our Events Calendar.

Many have considerable scientific sophistication or relevant professional training, while others have no medical or scientific background but have a strong interest in HIV prevention.
